Rodney DeaVault (Simmons College) traces the transformation of team "darling" Jean Gray from virginal Marvel Girl to bellicose and sexually rapacious siren Dark Phoenix, thus showing the link between female representations of power and the angel/monster dichotomy that marks the depiction of heroines. David Mitchell (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) examines how Enki Bilal's control of every element of the Nikopol Trilogy allows him to seamlessly integrate the unreal with the real, whereas in his film version, Immortal, he willingly separates the real and unreal between live-action and CGI.
